2018 Kentucky Mountain Jubilee 7-Day RV Super Rally
Nestled where the lush bluegrass of Kentucky meets the rolling green hills of Appalachia is the best-kept secret — Renfro Valley, ‘Kentucky’s Country Music Capital.’ The sound of music – country, gospel, bluegrass, and a blend of both original music and classic favorites is everywhere. This is the perfect place for Fantasy’s All-American Mountain Jubilee Super Rally, seven delightful days of festivities, food, music, and adventure in an almost-bygone era.
And what is a Super Rally, you may ask? A Super Rally is a one-time special event offered by Fantasy, chock full of amazing and exclusive tours and dining experiences. Because Super Rallies are not offered annually, best to book one when it comes your way, because you may not see it offered again!
Early fall is magical in this part of Kentucky, and that’s exactly when this joyful jubilee begins. We stay the entire time at the award-winning Renfro Valley RV Park. On Day 1, we meet for Fantasy’s signature orientation and get-acquainted party, followed by a wonderful introduction to all–things Appalachian! Featured are an Appalachian dinner and a private performance by local dancers.
The Appalachia region was one of the forerunners of the now trendy farm-to-table movement, currently embraced by some of the country’s most famous chefs. Ingredients are simple, sustainable, seasonal and organic — speaking the flavors of the land. And the dancing? Appalachian dancing is a form of folk dance developed in the area that is a cross between Irish dance, traditional English dance and clogging.
A tour of Shaker Village Historic Centre, hone to the Pleasant Hill Shakers, is the highlight of Day 2. The Pleasant Hill Shakers are known for their iconic architecture, skilled craftsmanship and deep spirituality. We’ll cruise the cool Kentucky River Palisades on the charming Dixie Belle Riverboat, as it wends its way through imposing limestone cliffs. We’ll also take a horse-drawn carriage ride and witness sustainable farming in action. Things we see growing will certainly turn up in one of our many meals together this week! Speaking of which, lunch is a splendid ‘seed-to-table’ experience at the Village. This evening, we’ll enjoy our first headline act!
In between Fantasy’s guided exploration of the area, there is plenty to do at the RV park, all within easy walking distance of your campsite! Play checkers, or just set sail in a rocker on a big, lazy porch. Stroll down to the Renfro Valley Grist Mill for luscious hand-dipped Mayfield ice cream. The many shops at The Village provide ample shopping opportunities for everything from handmade quilts to locally crafted wood working tools and a large selection of music.
A Brush Arbor Appalachian Homestead Tour ushers in Day 3. Spread out on 28 lazy rolling acres, this is an authentically restored antique Appalachian pioneer homestead that you won’t want to miss. Afterwards, we’ll gather for a local dinner before the big curtain rises on the Renfro Valley Bandstand!
We ease into Day 4 starting with lunch at the famous Limestone Grill. Fried Green Maters, a fried Bologna Sammy, Hillbilly Tacos, and Crispy Frogs Legs are just a few of the house specialties. Afterwards, we visit the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. This institution not only honors Kentucky performers, but all music professionals who have contributed to music in Kentucky and around the world. Tonight we laugh and sing along during a classic country and blue grass comedy show.
On the fifth day of fun, we take a guided tour of Bittersweet Cabin Village, followed by a picnic lunch. Bittersweet Cabin Village features four different styles of log cabins used to settle the Kentucky frontier during the days of Daniel Boone. From there, a Mountain Gospel Jubilee will set our spirits soaring skyward. Our evening concludes with an authentic Renfro Valley Saturday Barn Dance, unique to Renfro Valley. Finally, time to rest those dancing feet and get a little sleep!
Last day and last dance in Renfro Valley – and it’s a busy one! We start with a tour of Berea College, a liberal arts college, in fact the first college of the south to be non-segregated and coeducational. In lieu of tuition fees, all students must work instead. While here, we’ll tour the Phelps Stokes Chapel, learn about the student arts program, and visit the Frost Building. We head into downtown Berea for some world-class craft shopping and a tour of the Tater Knob Pottery studio to peruse all the beautifully handcrafted pottery items. Berea is the folk arts and craft capital of Kentucky after all! The historic Boone Tavern, famous for its legendary cornbread called ‘Boone Tavern Spoonbread,’ provides enjoyable local entertainment for us before we savor our elegant farewell dinner at this popular eatery.
Following our goodbye continental breakfast the next morning, our Mountain Jubilee Super Rally comes to a close all too soon. It’s been a fascinating glimpse into Appalachian culture, cuisine, and everyday life. Fantasy takes pride in planning itineraries that are a refreshing mix of sightseeing, leisure, adventure and culture. It’s all here waiting for you on the Renfro Valley Mountain Jubilee! In light of these fast-paced times, it’s so comforting to know that this tiny time warp exists in a peaceful Kentucky valley.
